Our Spreader Beam on the M30 highway in Madrid
This success project reflects our company’s ability to overcome complex challenges through detailed planning, the use of advanced technologies and effective logistics management.
Collaboration with the Grúas Aguilar team and the dedication of our staff were key to the success of the installation of the prefabricated bridge over the M30.
Project background
In October 2019, our company received a very ambitious assignment: to design and supply the lifting engineering for the installation of a prefabricated bridge over the M30 motorway in Madrid. The bridge sections weighed up to 300 tonnes and the project required a rapid delivery of modular spreader beams for cranes and all their accessories within one month.
Challenges
The project presented several significant challenges:
- Fast Manufacturing: We needed to produce Lifting Beams and accessories in a record time of one month.
- Specialized Slings: The slings had to fit into 300mm diameter holes and be flexible and strong enough to wrap around the concrete sections without damaging them.
- Special Materials: The need for heavy and uncommon materials further complicated delivery times and costs.
Applied solutions
1. Modular Spreader beams for cranes
It was decided to use the Spreader Beam for cranes with cascade formation (as in the image). The rigging plan was developed by means of an assembly with 3 modular Spreader Beams: on the upper part, a 400 ton capacity unit, model OX-SB-250/400 and on the lower part, two lower Spreader Beams with a capacity of 170 tonnes each, model OX-SB-170.

2. Main lifting accessories
Another key requirement was that the lower slings had to be inserted into 300mm diameter holes and be flexible and strong enough to embrace the bridge section at the base, without damaging themselves or the concrete, but these are not very common high-tonnage materials and all add to the cost of the project.
The chosen solution was to use special Dyneema slings, an ultra-strong and very light material, with an approximate weight of only 100 kg per sling and a diameter of 110 mm, to lift each section of the bridge using two basket units, in a “U” shape (as in the picture). image), with a resulting capacity of 200 tons per sling.
3. Other lifting accessories
Additionally, the lifting accessories were supplemented with all other lifting accessories: Steel cable with cable glands (a versatile and economical solution for this range of capacities) and Wide Body Shackles to avoid damaging the slings and therefore not reducing their capacity due to the capacity reduction factors that would apply if conventional shackles were used.
The management of obtaining all the accessories is also due to the good work of the purchasing department, since not all suppliers are capable of delivering this type of high tonnage accessories in such a short time.
